Make this simple DIY paint palette for preschoolers! Perfect for a painting party or art summer camp, too!

My husband thinks I’m a hoarder, but I like to think of myself as more of a strategic saver (just to be clear I’m not really a hoarder, but I do like to save random craft supplies like toilet paper tubes and milk lids for a rainy day). So a couple rainy days ago I noticed we had a rainbow of milk lids saved up and inspiration struck! I decided to make a simple DIY paint palette for my little toddler and preschool artists <3

Supplies

  • Cardboard
  • Milk lids
  • Paint
  • Paint brush
  • Hot glue gun

I started by drawing a simple paint palette on my scrap cardboard (if you’re having a hard time sketching it, try outlining a lowercase letter e- it looks very similar!). Next I cut out the palette and hot glued milk lids onto it. Done! This was such an easy project to put together!

My kids were SUPER excited to use our DIY paint palette! I mean, painting is always a winning activity over here, but combine that with this cool dramatic play prop and it became a whole new experience for them!

This would also be a fun Earth Day project. Kids could combine learning about the three R’s (reduce, resuse, and recycle) while making this project, then paint something related to the Earth Day theme on their papers. Don’t have an art easel? No worries! Check out our other popular tutorial, How to Make an Art Easel out of a Pizza Box! So kick back, order pizza, and pin these ideas to do later 🙂

  1. Thank you so much for the idea. I’ve been wanting to try paints with my toddler but when we did it was a mess since I would just put drops his painting table. That would end up everywhere but the paper! Hope this works!
