Welcome to summer! Temperatures are up and pool party invitations are aplenty. While I love the chance for my kids to splash around and have a good time in the water, pools make me capital “N” Nervous…I feel like there’s so much that can go wrong in the pool and my nerves get the best of me. This year I want to change that. I want to educate myself on what to look for and how to keep my kids safe when they are around the water so we can all enjoy summer together. This year, through the ZAC Foundation, I educated myself on the ABCD’s of water safety:
ADULT: Never let children be alone near or in a pool, ocean, lake, or river.
BARRIER: Have a four-sided fence that goes around your pool with a self-locking gate.
CLASSES: Kids and adults should take safety classes like swim lessons and CPR.
DRAINS: ALL swimmers should stay away from all pool and spa drains to avoid becoming trapped by the suction.
Did you catch that last one, about drains? That would not even have been something I thought about, but the ZAC Foundation is making water safety its mission by informing parents about the danger of outdated pool drains. Not familiar with the danger of pool drains? Take a minute to watch and share this important video to learn more about pool drain entrapment.
The ZAC Foundation is named after Zachary Archer Cohn, a six year old boy who tragically lost his life by becoming entrapped by an outdated pool drain cover. His parents, Karen and Brian Cohn, have started the ZAC Foundation to ensure that children and their parents know how to be safer around water through their education and advocacy programs. The ZAC Foundation provides a wealth of water safety tips, as well as resources and programming (ZAC Camps) for parents and children of all ages (birth to teenagers). Learn more about their ZAC Camps where the ABCD’s of water safety are being taught to children across America.
The Foundation targets children ages 5-9 with most of their safety programming and also has a children’s book available to help teach water safety to kids. You can enter to win one of 15 Summer Fun Kits from the ZAC Foundation below. Prizes include:
- The ZAC Foundation Children’s Book: The Polar Bear Who Couldn’t, Wouldn’t Swim
